Charmee All Set to Charm Mammootty

Charmme, one of the busiest actresses in Tollywood, will pair up with Mammootty in 'Dronar', to be directed by Shaji Kailas.
Mammooty, basking in the success of his mega blockbuster 'Pazhassi Raja', is busy with 'Chattambi Nadu' and will join 'Dronar' on November 7.

Charmme debuted in Malayalam a few years ago with the Vinayan film, 'Kaattu Chembakam' (2002). Her screen-name then was Kalyani. Post the debacle of that film at the B.O., Charmme had to struggle a lot before she could establish in Telugu. Recently, several films came out in Telugu with Charmme in the title role, such as 'Mantra' and 'Manorama'.

She is already working in a Malayalam film, Dileep starrer 'Aagathan'.

Nayantara Has no qualms with being Glamourous

Diana Kurien aka Nayantara, the dream girl of millions of youth in South India, is one of the most sought after actresses in Kollywood. One of the highest paid actresses down South, the siren has acquired an hourglass figure of late and looks ravishing in her latest film, ‘Villu’, opposite Vijay.

The glam queen debuted in Tamil opposite Sarath Kumar in ‘Aiya’, directed by Hari. Her big break was the Rajnikanth mega hit ‘‘Chandramukhi’’. Before that, she had done a few Malayalam films. Nayan has also made her presence felt in Telugu with a few blockbusters such as ‘Dubai Seenu’.

Excerpts from an exclusive interview with the sensational beauty...

Q: Do you feel sidelined in Tamil films, which are basically hero-oriented?
A: Though the film industry is male-dominated and male-oriented, it still counts as to how an actress makes use of her opportunities, however small they are, she gets. Isn’t it a fact that many leading heroines of today have all done miniscule and insignificant roles in their earlier films?

Q: Won’t you be doing heroine-oriented films?
A: Of course I would, as and when I do get such on opportunity.

Q: You seem to be more inclined towards glamourous roles...
A: Of course, I look glamourous and am acting glamourous, what’s wrong in it? Haven’t I looked homely and unglamourous in ‘Aiyaa’, ‘Eee’, ‘Chandramukhi’ and ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’?

Q: Any qualms about the many rumours about you?
A: I hardly bother to read them and react. I’ve been a topic of rumours right from my college days and after coming to film industry, I have kind of got used to it. This is a price, I’m afraid, one has to pay for stardom and for being popular.

Q: Do you miss anything due to your huge popularity?
A: Of course, yes! I have lost much of my liberty; I can’t shop around independently without people being aware of it or surrounding me. I can’t just like that go to a restaurant of my choice and eat there. More than this, I have to look beautiful, slim and trim as many youngsters take after actresses like us as their role-models. I sweat it out to remain slim and look good. In a way, it’s a kind of social responsibility!

Q: What’s the secret behind your slim figure?
A: I don’t do a lot of exercising but manage my food habits and keep them under control. Ice cream, soft drinks, oil and sweets are a big ‘no’ for me. I also use different creams, depending on the season, to protect my skin from getting affected.

Q: Your favourite food items...
A: My father was working in the Indian Air Force when I was born. I did much of my schooling in New Delhi and as such have developed a liking for North Indian food. I know only to eat and haven’t an idea about cooking. I can, however, distinguish good food from the bad one.

Q: What are your pluses and minuses... what kind of a person are you?
A: I will not define myself in a single line; in fact, I’m not sure if I can do that. If things don’t turn out as I have expected, I do get disappointed. I can’t have something in my mind and say something. Whatever is in my mind is reflected on my face. I react to things depending on my mood.

I love listening to melodies and like travelling. I like to keep on travelling in a car on an endless road. Family is my biggest strength. My family is very affectionate towards me but they haven’t pampered me. They’ve drawn a thin line in between.

London Dreams- A review

'London Dreams', directed by Vipul Shah, talks of two musicians, thick pals actually, and how jealousy drives a wedge in their friendship.

Let's clear a few myths before discussing the positive and negative factors of this film. 'London Dreams' is not 'Baiju Bawra'. 'London Dreams' is not 'Rock On!!', 'Abhimaan', 'Yaarana' or 'Saajan' either. The truth is, 'London Dreams' borrows from Milos Forman's brilliant film 'Amadeus' [1984], which was based on Salieri and Mozart's life.

'London Dreams' is a complete departure from Vipul Shah's earlier outings, 'Aankhen', 'Waqt' and 'Namastey London'. This film is about relationships and tends to get very real and intense, in the post-interval portions specifically. The scale of 'London Dreams' is gigantic and the execution of concerts [it's about a band] sweeps you off your feet.

In terms of execution, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that 'London Dreams' is amongst Vipul Shah's most accomplished works to date. Also, it boasts of incredible performances by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. But there are hiccups too and it's these deficiencies that bog the film down!

It takes time to get into Ajay's world [its Ajay who's narrating the story here]. The film moves back and forth and it's only when the two buddies, now adults, meet that you realize where the story is headed. The first hour depicts the two extreme characters - Ajay, who's an introvert and who cannot think of anything but his goal and Salman, a happy-go-lucky guy, laidback and fun-loving, least focused.

The narrative has some interesting moments in the first hour, but the actual story unravels only towards the second half. The first half, frankly, only sets things up for the explosive drama that is to follow. The wheels start moving when Ajay plays a vicious game and hatches a conspiracy to ruin his buddy's career.

It's the second hour that does the trick. You can't help but carry several sequences in your heart, even after you've made an exit from the auditorium...

But there're roadblocks too. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is a downer. 'London Dreams' is about a rock band, about music, about concerts and the music had to be the soul of the film. Unfortunately, it's not! The songs have been filmed in the most energetic fashion, but how one wishes its music was one of the strengths of the film.

Also, the film could've concluded when the two friends re-unite at the station. Adding one more song thereafter only dilutes the impact of the emotionally correct sequence that has just been witnessed. Besides, the song in question hasn't been promoted either, so it only comes across as an aberration.

Prior to that, Ajay's outburst at the end of the concert is far from convincing. The film has a real feel, real characters and real situations, but the outburst looks unreal and is one of the drawbacks, from the writing point of view. It's just not convincing!

Besides, Ajay's childhood character is shown fleeing from the airport and making it big in a foreign land [London], without any support whatsoever. It's unpalatable!

Vipul Shah has handled this intricate subject well, but the writing could've been tighter. Sejal Shah's cinematography is super. Brownie points for capturing the concerts brilliantly. Salim-Sulaiman's background score matches international standards.

Both Salman and Ajay vie for top honours. Salman has a role that the junta would take to instantly and the actor too endears himself to the viewers. He's stupendous. When it comes to displaying intensity on screen, very few can live up to the standards set by Ajay. To state that he packs in a power-packed performance would be an understatement. They, in fact, compliment each other wonderfully well.

Asin is admirable and pairs off very well with Salman. She is sure to have a new name after this film - Chennai Express [that's how Salman addresses her affectionately, all through the film]. Om Puri has a brief role. Aditya Roy Kapur is very good and registers an impact. Rannvijay Singh doesn't get much to do, except throw nasty looks at Salman. Manoj Pahwa provides some funny moments. Brinda Parekh is okay.

The biggest drawback of 'London Dreams' is its climax and also the music, which is the weakest link of the movie.

Aladin - Review

Most stories sound interesting on paper or when narrated in 10/15 minutes flat. But when you watch the full-blown cinematic version, you realize why most Hindi films fall flat on their face.

This fantasy had the trappings to transport you to fantasyland, but... Seriously, Sujoy could've run his imagination wild and come up with a film that would've made the child in you jump, scream and clap with glee. But 15/20 minutes into the film and you realize that 'Aladin' is merely a visual spectacle. A film that lacks soul!

Let's give the credit where it's due. 'Aladin' starts with a bang, with the initial portions holding a lot of promise. But no sooner does the genie appears, he breaks into a song and you realize that is 'Aladin' no different from those mundane films churned out week after week. Sadly, 'Aladin' only slides downwards after this point. Sure, there're some interesting moments, but you can actually count those sequences.

The problem is not with the story, but the screenplay [also penned by Sujoy Ghosh]. It rests on absurdities. Okay, one expects absurdities in a fantasy, you can be pardoned for it, but at least they should have the power to keep you hooked. In this case, they don't!

Also, the entire track, when Amitabh loses his powers and becomes an ordinary mortal, looks gimmicky. At the same time, it looks weird when Amitabh fights an entire army of Sanju's henchmen in the end. It gets very formulaic at this point. Not just that, even the climax is ridiculous.

Sujoy Ghosh's screenplay is bad, to put it bluntly. Given the kind of stars and budget at his disposal, the director should've come up with a slick entertainer, but 'Aladin' comes across as a feeble clone of a poor Hollywood film. Like his last outing 'Home Delivery', this one too is high on gloss, but low on content.

The visual effects are excellent at places, but tacky at times. Vishal-Shekhar's music is strictly okay. However, too many songs in the initial reels act as roadblocks. The cinematography is top notch.

'Aladin' belongs to Riteish, who's easy on the eyes. The best part is, he looks the character and enacts it without going overboard. He's at his natural best here. Surprisingly, Amitabh Bachchan is over the top this time, which puts you off after a point. Sanjay Dutt has two standard expressions from start to end. Jacqueline Fernandez gets no scope, but she looks gorgeous nonetheless.

Ratna Pathak Shah is wasted. Ditto for Victor Banerjee. And what is a wonderful actor like Mita Vashisht doing in this film? Saahil Khan and Arif Zakaria are okay.

On the whole, 'Aladin' is a terrible waste of a terrific opportunity. Hugely disappointing!

Katrina on the road to rebellion?

Salman Khan’s girls have always failed him. This time it is Katrina Kaif, who is trying to strike a cordial relationship with Sallu’s archrival Shah Rukh Khan. She has been noticed to be mixing with SRK and his friends Karan Johar as well as Aditya Chopra at any given opportunity.
Last week, she was seen happily interacting with SRK at Subhash Ghai’s wedding anniversary and Sussanne Khan’s birthday party. When asked about the same by a news daily, the actress burst out, “I fail to understand why people must constantly focus on just one aspect of an event.”

“I’m not complaining because I know that if you are in the eye of the media, it only means that you are important enough to them. However, my bumping into Shah Rukh or spending time with him at an event is just a regular thing. I think people should stop trying to look for controversy in every nook and cranny. All of us are here to work. And we have common functions to attend. Naturally, when we’re under the same roof, we will interact. Why make a fuss? Who wouldn’t want to associate with Shah Rukh or Karan Johar?” she said.

Her sky-high ambition is making her associate with directors of repute, and most are SRK’s friends. “Karan thinks out of the box. On one hand, he makes a ‘Dostana’ and then a path-breaking film like ‘Wake Up Sid’. Naturally, I’d like to do a film for his banner. Likewise, working with Aditya is a pleasure. He has a young unit and they work with clockwork precision. Doing a film for them is being on a school camp, but completely result oriented.’’

Hmmm…smart moves, Kat!

Big B under Threat!

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has received threat calls from an unknown person on his mobile, the actor revealed it on his blog.

Big B, who played a genie in his latest rlease Aladin, wrote: "I visit a Muslim dargah and a Hindu temple has been viciously criticised by an unknown element on my mobile. He says it is incorrect of me to do so and that I should never do it again."

Amitabh Bachchan has been paying a visit to the Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai for the past few years.

The actor in his reply said: "Well dear man, if you are reading this insignificant little blog of mine, here is what I have to say to you. I am going to do it again and shall continue to do it. And I want to see how you are going to stop me. If you have the courage and guts com and get me."

Big B, who recently celebrated his 67th birthday earlier this month, said: "I do have his mobile number and I do have a name too. I believe that there is no law that can protect such atrocious uttering. We live in a temperate secular society where we learn to respect all religions. My belief is of my own making. If the temple or the mosque or a dargah has no objection to my visits ; if my Constitution and the laws of the country give me that freedom and if I do not offend them, then who is this man to stop me or correct me ?"

"It is elements like this that penetrate the psyche of vulnerable and innocent people and subject them to unnecessary and unjustified bias. I strongly object to it and abhor the existence of such elements in society. This gentleman even threatens me by getting personal. He says that my film Aladin shall not have success because of this deed of mine."

The legendary actor said he will never change his routine by a mere threaten call: "At the cost of every film of mine failing, I am not going to change my routine. If I wish to go to a temple I shall go there. If I wish to go to a mosque I shall go there as well and so also to a gurudwara or a church. And I want to see who is going to stop me from doing so."

Thr actor's film Aladin has been praised by his followers.

Will Shamita Make It?

There's chance that Shamita may not be able to attend her sister’s wedding. According to highly-placed sources at Colors, there seems to be no provision to get a contestant out of a game show for a wedding.
Hard as it may be to believe, Shilpa Shetty’s kid-sister now locked away in Bigg Boss 3, is oblivious of the momentous developments in her star-sister’s life.
Says a highly-placed Colors source, “Shamita has not been told anything about Shilpa’s engagement or the marriage in the last week of November. As far as Shamita knows the marriage was supposed to happen in December after the show was over.”
Now that Shilpa has approached the channel to evict her sister in time for the wedding- and a meeting between the two parties is on the cards this weekend - the channel bosses are at a loss as to how the rules can be bent to get Shamita out of the Bigg Boss house.
Says the source, “There’s a provision for a house-mate to be brought out in case of an extreme emergency. It happened with Jade Goody last year. But does a sister’s unscheduled wedding qualify as a family crisis? We’re now wondering if the same rule as Jade can be applied to Shamita’s case.”
The international Big Brother rules are being consulted. If there’s no provision for a contestant to leave the game for a family wedding, then Shamita Shetty may not get the permission to leave Bigg Boss house for the wedding!
This however seems improbable, considering Shilpa’s old relations with the reality show. (She was contestant on Bigg Brother and hosted Bigg Boss 2).
Says the source from Colors, “After meeting Shilpa this weekend we’ll work out a strategy on Shamita’s eviction.” According to plans if rules apply, Shamita’s eviction will be done live. “If an unexpected turn of events helps us boost our TRPs we’re certainly not shy of putting it on camera. We did with Jade Goody. We’ll do it with Shamita.”
The pop philosopher of the show Amitabh Bachchan is expected to do the needful. He will be breaking the news of Shilpa’s engagement and impending marriage to Shamita.
“The rest is up to Shamita. Once we’re sure she can be evicted whether she decides to come out or stay in the House is entirely her decision,” ends the channel source.

Kanden Kadhalai No where Near Jab We Met.

You'd think re-making a movie might be an easy job: you've got everything on hand, after all. The script's written, the music's set and every nuance has already been finely polished.

But it's close to tight-rope walking when you're bringing a cult classic into Tamil, and the effort shows in Sun Pictures' and Moserbaer's Kanden Kadhalai, the painstakingly re-made Jab We Met [ Images ], directed by Jeyamkondaan-fame R Kannan. Naturally, expectations are sky-high and the director's done his best to match Imtiaz Ali's efforts.

In many ways, KK follows the Jab We Met formula in a near-perfect fashion. You have the opening shot of an intensely bland-looking Shakthi aka Shakthivel (Bharath), the MD of Rajaskar Group of Companies on the verge of a nervous breakdown: his mother's just walked out with her auditor, and he's in the middle of tough financial negotiations.

His complete failure at a love affair is the proverbial straw on a camel's back; he's just about ready to throw the towel, and gets onto a random train to Madurai when he runs into a little whirlwind called Anjali (Tamannaah), who could talk the hind leg off a donkey.

The girl is supposed to be from the land of sons of soil Theni (!), and makes sure you know it at every moment as she prattles on and on about everything under the sun, including her lover Gautham (Munna). His taciturn replies don't turn her off; she's intrigued more than ever.

The two run into situations fraught with hilarity and peril, sing songs (that simply don't fit in and hamper the pace) and finally end up at Theni, just in time to meet Anjali's impressively large family (Ratna, Nizhalgal Ravi, Azhagam Perumal and co), which doesn't seem to mind her revealing costumes at all, or the fact that she's suddenly brought a stranger to her home. The only one who seems to care is her morose grandfather (Ravichandran), who promptly does an about-turn and disappoints you.

Matters cruise along in this fashion: Sakthi settles slowly into Anjali's family (and no one at his office seems inclined to inquire the missing MD's whereabouts); she tries to set her cousin Roja [ Images ] (Sapan Saran) as his love interest and slam-bang in the middle of it all wades in Mokkai Rasu (Santhanam), Anjali's husband-to-be, and sets the scene for some hilarious moments, much appreciated by the audience which hoots with pleasure.

But paradise on earth can only last so long. Everything collapses on itself when Anjali's family decides to get her married to Mokkai Rasu and the ever-talkative girl hatches her next plan, in company of Shakthi, leading to a few interesting, and emotional situations.

So far so good. It would have been even better, if the second half had sustained the pace of the first.

You'd think, Tamannaah might be the incredibly odd one out in a Theni family but once you get past her North Indian looks, the girl actually manages to impress you with her acting. She's bright, bubbly, and despite some fits and starts, is pretty convincing as someone who always thinks positive, in the direst of situations. Chinmayi's voice suits her admirably. As for the emotional scenes, when she breaks down in Ooty; she genuinely packs a punch.

In contrast, it's Bharath who doesn't quite deliver with his usual panache. For a guy who's pulled of a few daring roles, he flounders except when he's the stoic, stern-faced MD. You suspect that this might be because of Pattukkottai Prabhakar's dialogues, which are all right when it comes to sentimental or even emotional scenes but fall short at bringing youthfulness and pep. And there's a faint North Indian flavour that takes a bit getting used to.

Barring Santhanam who delivers with his usual style, the rest of the cast doesn't have much to do.

P G Muthiah's camera is bright, colourful, and does its best to capture the romantic mood of the story, but Vidyasagar's music, both the background score and the songs are a big let-down. What happened to the guy who gave us such sensitive fare in Pirivom Sandhippom?

Thankfully, R Kannan's screenplay incorporates enough twists and turns that make you forget the flaws, and get you back on track whenever you're in danger of getting lost. This is the quintessential romantic story, and you haven't had many movies concentrating on love alone.

In comparison with Jab We Met, you might find the magic slightly wanting. On its own, though, Kanden Kadhalai has its unique moments. And for that, it's certainly worth a watch.

Ek Niranjan - Down the Drain?

Expectations were high for the Puri Jagannadh-Prabhas Telugu film Ek Niranjan. This is Puri's first release of this year. Unfortunately, the film does not live up to the expectations.

Puri scripts a story around a lost-and-found son -- a common theme many decades ago. And even if it has been shown with plenty of songs and stylish action, it is still the same old wine!

As a child, Chotu (Prabhas) is separated from his family and picked up by Chidambaram (Makarand Deshpande). Chidambaram makes him beg. But one day, Chotu helps the police catch Chidambaram, and is given a rupee for the act. This makes Chotu realise that he can earn money by catching criminals for the police. And that's what he does.

He runs into Sameera (Kangna Ranaut ), who is a guitar teacher but hardly plays the guitar. She just has a bunch of kids vouching for her. Her brother -- whom Chotu is after -- works with Johnnybhai (Sonu Sood ).

Chotu and Sameera fall in love. But there is Johnnybhai to contend with, as well as an aspiring minister (Posani).

Puri tries to earnestly build up a deft screenplay with a wafer-thin story (which is increasingly becoming his trademark). But the clichéd plot falls flat despite all the technical gimmicks (fights and all) and attempts to prop it up. The less said of the comedy, the better. It's so inane and makes one wonder if it was necessary to insert the mindless scenes at all. Even Johnnybhai's character was rather queer in depiction.

Prabhas is effortless as Chotu -- beating up people and romancing Sameera in Switzerland . He acts well and the movie is watchable for him although he has developed a similar style in all his films. An image change may do him good.

Kangna's Telugu debut can't be really raved about. She looks pretty but as far as performance goes, there's nothing much to write about as the script doesn't have anything for her to showcase her acting skills.

Sonu Sood, a constant in Puri's films, plays the villain with panache. Makarand Deshpande can perhaps be asked why he did the role as it didn't demand someone of his calibre to play it. One feels sorry for the comedians Brahmanandam, Venu Madhav, Ali and Sunil who are good actors but given some absurd parts to play.

Technically, Puri ensures that the film is in place. Shyam K Naidu's camerawork was in sync. Mani Sharma's music can be heard and 'seen' on screen. Stunt Siva's orchestration of fights in some parts is stylish.

Making a slick film is easy but filling it with content is important; the latter is where Puri seems to have lost out. It is high time he takes stock of the situation and comes out of the Pokiri mould.
